Patio power washing
Dirt, mold and stains make patios slippery and old-looking. When to clean, how often, and why the right pressure matters.
3 min read
Patios, decks and walkways collect dirt, mold and stains — especially in shady spots. Besides looking worn out, a green or slimy surface can be slippery.
When to do it
- Spring, to clean up after winter and get the patio ready for the season.
- Fall, to remove leaves, mold and stains before the cold.
- Before sealing or staining a deck or pavers — the surface needs to be clean and dry first.
How often
For most homes, once or twice a year is enough. Shaded, damp areas may need it more often.
Why the right pressure matters
More pressure isn't always better. Too much can damage wood, wash out the sand between pavers or leave marks on the surface. Each material — concrete, pavers, wood decks — needs a different approach.
Getting ready
Move furniture, grills and planters off the area, and close nearby windows. Let us know about outdoor outlets, lights or plants close to the patio so we can protect them.
